This is the highest resort in the largest ski area in the world the Portes du Soleil, which spans two countries and more than 650km of piste. The area enjoys extremely good snow conditions as it is located in the shadow of Mount Blanc. The accommodation is 2 and 3 stars and is all doorstep skiing. The nightlife is very similar to the ski area – varied and difficult to navigate, especially after one or two drinks!

The statistics for the Portes du Soleil are almost inconceivable. The sheer number of runs means that outside of the highest season, the runs are rarely crowded. Avoriaz also enjoys the reputation as the snowboard capital of France with excellent facilities for novice and experienced boarders including its own snowboard-exclusive runs and half-pipe. Le Plateau above the village of Avoriaz is ideally suited to beginners, with its network of draglifts that serve the nursery slopes. With its 118 red pistes, the Portes du Soleil has more skiing for intermediate skiers than most resorts have runs. Numerous wide-open intermediate pistes descend from the Pas de Chavanette, which forms the border between France and Switzerland. More than 25 black runs provide some of the most rewarding advanced skiing to be found anywhere in Europe. The Portes du Soleil circuit features possibly the most notorious pisted black in the world - the heavily mogulled Wall. With a vertical descent of 1200m from Les Hauts Forts to Les Prodains, the Juan Varnet World Cup downhill run is one of 7 black runs in the Secteur des Hauts Forts.

Avoriaz has an après ski programme to match its ski area - varied and difficult to navigate! Those snow covered streets make walking while intoxicated a little difficult. First stop is often the English owned pub Tavillion which serves a selection of familiar ales and lagers, which go down well while watching all live sport on the numerous TV screens. For those favouring refreshment not best served in a pint glass you will feel more at home in The White Horse or Globe Trotters where shooters and cocktails can be found in abundance. Once the bars have closed at 2am, The Choucas is the popular choice for continued enjoyment its doors are open until 4am, and it serves various spirits by the bottle…

Pierre et Vacances La Falaise: The Falaise provides excellent accommodation in rooms sleeping 4 and 5 people directly on the pistes in the Falaise sector of the village.

Pierre et Vacances / Maeva Antarès: As with all residences in Avoriaz, Antares provides doorstep skiing, it is located in the Crozats section of the Village and similarly to the Falaise sleeps between 4 and 5 people in each apartment.
